Gather together your pre-packaged foods (with, of course, appropriate expiration dates), because another food drive has been initiated at Notre Dame. The grade 12 Social Justice class is yet again the leader of this year’s annual endeavour and encourages all Jugglers to participate.

As the lead teacher of Social Justice, Ms. McTague has partnered with St. Helen’s Elementary to continue to pursue these charitable endeavours which have been negatively impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

I recently had the chance to speak with Ms. McTague and asked her some pertinent questions about the nature of this food drive.

Q: What inspired you to partner up with St Helen’s for this food drive?

Mr Howie brought up the idea to me and asked if it would be something SJ 12 could take on. St Helens has always done a food drive around this time of year, but last year it was put on hold due to COVID.

Q: Who does this charitable act benefit?

This benefits people in the parish‘s community especially the ones in need of food security.

Q: What are other ways we can support this charity?

St. Helen’s does not only collect cans once a year – they collect all year round. Their biggest intake is around Thanksgiving and Christmas, but they help families in the community all year round. Donating directly to the parish any time of year would be beneficial.

Q: Has COVID interfered with your ability to do these charity drives?

As mentioned above, St Helen’s could not collect food last year due to COVID. This year they are able to resume collection, and we are excited to help.

Q: Are there any upcoming charities or drives that we should expect to see this year from your social justice class?

The SJ 12 class will be putting on a toy drive for Ronald McDonald House in November/December. We will have other initiatives later on in the year as well but they are TBD.

And there you have it. If you are unable to donate, there are several other ways to further support this charitable cause and the next to come.

This will not be the last time we see the Social Justice class in action; in this example, they are advocating to make a difference in our local community one canned food at a time.

Please bring all food donations to the designated boxes that can be found in your C block class.
